Your Web Presence Is Important – Part 4
While the web developer is creating your site, you probably forgot to ask the developer a question that you should have asked in the beginning which is:
“How are people going to see my site?”
We are going to briefly talk about the concept of “hosting a web site”. Think of hosting as buying a house. The house comes with an address to tell everyone where you stay at. That house could be on an avenue, lane, court, street, circle or parkway. Let’s briefly see how hosting works.
If your contemporaries have web sites, you may notice that they have an address that looks like this:
www.mommascrazypancakes.com
Mommas Crazy Pancakes is really a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that behind the name, it has a cyber address that is a number! So therefore, the name stands for a number or physical location on the Internet. Mommas address could look like this
Visible – www.mommascrazypancakes.com
Invisible – 218.92.189.0
That’s the ticket! You see, when you type in a URL on the internet, you’re typing in a persons “home” address or “home” page that you want to visit. Each URL has its unique address and no two URL’s are the same! So when you buy your URL, people will type in your URL just to check you out!
When you purchase a “URL” or a site name, what you are purchasing is an address to go on your “house” on the internet. Your address could end with .com (street),
.biz (avenue), .info (lane). There are some addresses that are reserved for “the man” .gov (governments) and educational institutions (edu).
So while the developer is plugging away, you need to decide on a name for your web-site. Most SOHO business owners go with their business name but it could be a name relating to the business or your personal name. You might want to consult a web marketer on this issue also.
Man oh man! By golly, you are getting closer to having this web presence become a reality. A few months ago, you wouldn’t even think about a web-site but now, you’re bragging to your contemporaries about your site at the coffee shop and you’ve become the latest SOHO guru on technology until you are asked…
